Transfer of references from WorldCat (OCLC)

There are several ways to get references from WorldCat to EndNote. The situation determines which one should use:

Search via EndNote

You can search WorldCat via EndNote. You do not have to decide on the storage of files with formats etc. The disadvantage of this approach is that you cannot use the base’s search interface which provides many good search options. Search through EndNote is recommended if you are looking for specific articles you know in advance.

How to:

    • Select «Online Search» from the «Tools» menu
    • Set «Group Viewing Mode» to «Online Search Mode (Temporary Library)»
    • Enter search term and click «Search»
    • The search results appear in a window for temporary references and fall into the group called «WorldCat (OCLC) – UiB» under the «Online Search» groups.
    • To transfer references from that WorldCat to your own EndNote library, select the desired references and click the «Copy to Local Library» button
    • We strongly recommend to always check that the information is in the correct field in the EndNote library

Direct transfer of references from WorldCat

This is probably the best way to get references by searching the base’s interface, but not having to deal with intermediate storage with file location and formats.
(See more on Direct transfer using Safari.)

How to:

    • Search and mark relevant references in WorldCat
    • Click the «Export» button
    • Under «Export», select «Market records from this search»
    • Check that «EndNote» is checked in the «Export To field»
    • Click the «Export» button
    • Depending on how the browser is set up, you may be asked what to do with the file. Choose to open it.
    • You may then get a dialog box with questions about which import filter to use.
      If so, select «WorldCat (OCLC)»
    • We strongly recommend to always check that the information is in the correct field in the EndNote library

Import from WorldCat

There may be situations where it is not possible / desirable to transfer references directly to EndNote (eg if you are using a different PC than the one on which you have the program).

How to:

In WorldCat

    • Search and mark relevant references in WorldCat
    • Click «Export»
    • Select «Text file» under «Export To»
    • Click «Export»
    • Choose to save the file (if your browser is not set up to do this automatically)

In EndNote

    • Select «Import…» from the «File» menu

    • Browse to the current file

    • Select  «WorldCat (OCLC)» under «Import Option»

    • We strongly recommend to always check that the information is in the correct field in the EndNote library
